Set PiecesAt TYC we have many, many, many different set pieces!! Most of these set pieces have been created specifically for a TYC show!! Our TYC Theatre was designed to be a "Black Box Theatre" which means that everything is black including the walls, our tech box and our stage boxes. At TYC we have 17 black boxes that we use in many different ways. We use our black boxes for making a set sturdier, as tables, as seats and as independent set pieces. Each box was hand made at TYC and, by my calculations, have been painted and repainted black over 100 times for shows!! BUT the black boxes weren't always black, for one of our holiday programs we painted them up to look like lego bricks and for another we wrapped them up in brown butcher's paper!! Our black boxes have also been used as chalkboards in Animal Farm and decorated in tinsel, feathers, crepe paper and tulle to look like wonderland for Alice of Hearts. FUN TYC FACT: There are over 200 hand prints of past and present participants on our walls!!! Every year we are lucky enough to perform to the new grade sevens in high schools across Cairns with our production of "Wishfly". Wishfly uses a fairly simple set but that's not to say that it isn't intricate!! The ladder (or Wishing Tree) was made by the fabulous Hayley Gillespie who created this beautiful work of art!! The tree has leaves made of sheet music and book pages and even has a little clockwork bird perched on its branch! This tree is Tom's home base, and where you will see him for the majority of the show, I guess that makes him a bird too!! This beautiful tree sits in the foyer, silently guarding all of our students! You may remember that earlier this year our performance of "The Grumpiest Boy in the World". Well in that performance we commissioned Hayley Gillespie to make us a huge fridge that could be used to change the background of our scene. Well, Hayley spent a few days talking to us and looking at some reference photos before creating the masterpiece known as "The Fridge". Hayley did an amazing job piecing it all together and making it look just like a fridge!! It took a few weeks to fill in the pictures for the background, most of them being done by our fabulous director Leigh and her two sons!! Once they were all created it was all about using the cranks (and our incredible acting skill) to change the background each time we changed scene!! The fridge currently sits at the costume room doors, welcoming people into our hat hallway!! FUN TYC FACT: The pictures that are all over the foyer walls are performance photos from our 2012 ShortCuts festival! It took a whole week to put all the photos up and many helpers! There are over 300 photos up there!!! Our Roving Troupe use the TYC Toy Box as a part of their act, all about what they want to be when they grow up. Princesses, Policemen, Firemen, Pirates and Ballerinas all pop out of the toy box to play with all the children!! Hayley also had a big hand in creating this masterpiece and it is perfectly vibrant to match the vibrant costumes of the rovers!! This set piece can be found in the foyer and stores all of our Roving Troupe costumes!!! Costumes!!!Here at TYC we have a TONNE of costumes that meet any student's creative character image!!! To the left is only a SMALL sample of our pink costumes, as you can imagine, there were too many to just pile on top of Catherine, we'd lose her forever!! We love playing dress up here at TYC and if we don't have a costume, we'll make it!! There are over 100 costumes in the TYC costume vault, and many more spread all over the place!!! Each costume is sorted into colour and every time it is used it is inspected carefully to make sure there is no damage before it hits the stage!!! We treasure everyone of our costumes and are lucky enough to have most of them donated to us by students and families!!! That's all the secrets we can reveal this week..... If you want even more insider secrets then don't forget to REGISTER FOR OUR SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMS! They are not to be missed :) A friendly reminder that next week will be the last week of classes, make sure you start learning your lines to REALLY impress your teacher!!! We hope you have a great week!!!! This is Evelyn, Exiting Stage Left!!
