THE AUDITION METHOD
Auditioning children and young people should be undertaken in a meaningful and respectful manner. The usual method of audtioning is for students to prepare pre-rehearsed monologues to perform infront of the director. However, this is not always the best way to audition children and young people.
It is essential that when auditioning a child or young person you as a theatre director are informed about the following:
- Do they have stage presence
- Can they memorise dialgoue easily
- Do they have a loud voice
- Do they move easily on the stage
- Do they work well with others
- Do they take direction easily
- Do they give creative ideas to the group
These qualities are often difficult to see if undertaking an audition by themselves. Therefore, a group audtion process is most rewarding for both the director and for the student actor. This can often be done at lunch times (which also shows their dedication to the play) while playing a number of drama games.
